Will I lose my curl pattern if I wear my hair straight?

11/14/2017

One of the most asked questions I get from my natural hair women is 'Will I lose my curl pattern if I wear my hair straight?"

The answer is no! With proper care and professional attention, you can keep your beautiful curl pattern and still enjoy a variety of styles.

If you have lost your natural curl pattern or sustained breakage, then the most likely cause for this type of damage is the direct result of heat applied incorrectly to your hair.

Here’s another question I frequently get:  “What is my curl pattern? Well there are different curl patterns for different people and curl patterns can be different even on the same head.  If you wear “natural” styles and you are not sure what your exact curl pattern is just schedule a consultation with me and I’ll help you determine your exact natural curl pattern.
Natural Curl is Back
Natural Hair Straight Styling
Natural Curly Hair Pattern
Pic 1 - the hair after shampoo and detengled before the blow out.
Pic 2  -the hair after the blow out
Pic 3 - the hair 2 weeks after the blow out after the shampoo.

So let’s get back to your curl pattern …there is one essential way to be sure your natural curl pattern is not lost … beware of excessive heat.

Your natural curl pattern is a wonderful thing! Why? Because your natural curl, shows how HEALTHY your hair is.

When excessive heat is used on the hair, then the natural moisture and oils that keep your hair and scalp healthy can be depleted.

Exactly how can too much heat affect your natural curl pattern?
  • Breakage to the hair
  • Pressure and tension on the hair
  • Unhealthy curl elongation
  • Loss of elasticity

You want to avoid all of the negatives and enjoy an occasional straight style, so what can you do?  When applied by a professional, heat in moderation, can give you the healthy results you are looking for and yet will not eradicate your natural curl pattern.

The key to maintaining natural curls, full of moisture and shine is using the proper heat protectants during the blow dry process and pressing process to help insulate the hair from heat.

I have some great information for you about this, and when you visit me at the salon, you’ll be thrilled with the options to keep your curls healthy and happy. When you want the occasional straight style you can be confident that your hair will be treated carefully and safely.  Plus I’ll give you more tips on keeping your natural hair beautiful and healthy like:
  • Securing your hair with a silk scarf or bonnet
  • Maintaining bounce with pin curls
  • Using a silk or stain pillow case
  • Trimming every 6 to 8 weeks.

I’m looking forward to seeing you and helping you keep your natural healthy curl pattern, whether you chose a curly or straight style.

Hair color is a great way to add a little spice to your lifestyle. Yes, lifestyle….color can be a HUGE part of building a sense of one’s self confidence.  Just like your brilliant personality, hair colors come in different formulas and require different levels of care and commitment to yield the desired results.
Picture
A “pop” of color can add interest and excitement to your natural hair style.  Each natural curl will catch the summer sun and bring out the beauty that is intrinsic to natural hair styles.

Executing the right color is a serious accomplishment. As a professional stylist,  I can safely take your hair to a darker or lighter shade while keeping it healthy and strong.

Do you love summer breezes?  Then you’ll love what a little color can do to add depth to your cut or style … color is  great way for men and women to cover grays and it works for all types of hair.

I’ve mentioned the care and commitment that goes along with your decision to get color for your hair, but I can’t stress these two actions enough….care and commitment.  When you and I meet for a color consultation, I can tell you how very safe and acceptable your color choices can be. Set up your consultation at least 48 hours prior to getting any treatment.

Autumn is just a couple of weeks away and winter is not far behind.  Did you know that changes in the season can cause dryness in your hair and scalp?  The cooler weather can affect your skin and hair, causing dryness that you can see and feel.
What can you do to protect your skin, scalp and hair from the damage that can come with Fall and Winter?  Drinking plenty of water and for your hair, add Hot Oil Treatments to your regular  care routine.  Just a few of the benefits:
·         Seals in much needed moisture
·         Reduces dryness and fall out

Cat! How can I stop using chemical relaxers and grow my own natural hair?

3/24/2014

So many of my clients have been asking me about going natural.
Picture
My Model started with The Big Chop
For some clients who want a more direct approach, THE BIG CHOP is an option, which means cutting all of the relaxer out of the hair at one time…or cutting the hair down to where the new,  growth of hair meets the remaining relaxer.  With this method you may decide to keep a short, stylish “Barber” type cut or depending on the length of your hair, try a natural style like Twist Outs, Two Strand Twists, Locs, Coil Sets and more!

As you can see we’ll  have lots to talk about …and you can rest assured that your comfort and style will be at the top of our conversation!  Connect with me if you are anticipating a “transition” to your beautiful NATURAL hair!
“Going Natural” is the term used for becoming relaxer free  ….and TRANSITION is the method for no more chemical straightening and for some individuals, no more color either.

Of course if you are thinking about making the transition, I’d like to meet with you in person for a consultation.  I know you’ll have a lot of questions about how to get started with the process.

One of the most important topics we’ll discuss in our meeting will be the timing. It will be a gradual process and I know you’ll want to look your best through-out, so we’ll talk about some of the protective measures we can take to keep your hair healthy and avoid damage.

Picture
With no chemical relaxers ...just color highlights and my model's hair is healthy and beautiful
Picture
Switching to various styles is fun and gives the hair a "break" from styles that require a lot of heat.
Developing a regimen of trimming the relaxer out will be important and we’ll work out a plan with the safest and best options for keeping a great hair design for you  including:

  • Thermal Styling
  • Curls
  • Pin Curls
  • Flat Irons
  • Weaves
  • Braids and
  • Other protective styling

Cat.... I'm thinking about growing Locs ...can you give me any advice?

When you think of growing Locs …think of it as a journey. When you see a healthy head of thriving Locs, you are looking at a true sign of a journey…. of patience ….and of love.
Picture
My model's Locs are colored in a warm blonde shade that is maintained with regular protein treatments
No matter what your hair type, from super course to straight…or what negatives you may have been told…if you are considering growing Locs,  you should schedule a complimentary consultation with me.   As an experienced Loctician, I can give you advice about your hair type and I can dispel many fears or uncertainties you may have about growing the beautiful Locs of your dreams.

Did you know that one of the primary reasons women (and men) do not pursue their desire to grow Locs is because they think it will limit their ability to try different hair styles?  That is simply not true…. depending on how we begin your journey, you can have lots of versatility with your Locs …. and I’ll show you some of the many possibilities.

Schedule a consultation
So what’s the most wonderful story about Locs?
They are unique and individual in excellence. No two people have exactly the same Locs and that is a wonder of nature!   If you want to know more about taking the journey towards growing Locs, connect with me and I can help you decide the best way to start your Loc journey !!
During our consultation, I can determine what’s best for you and together we can decide on the steps we’ll need to take to begin your journey. Depending on your hair type, we can even make a good estimate on the amount of time it will take to reach the hair length that you desire.  I’ll answer your questions about:

  • How to start your Locs
  • How to care for your Locs while they are forming
  • How different types of hair may Loc (not all hair Locs in the same way)
  • The correct size Locs to start with ….if you want to grow really long Locs
  • Caring for your Locs
  • Coloring your Locs
  • Styling your Locs…and more!

Cat, How do I decide if a short cut is right for me?

3/3/2014

A short style can be the perfect look for you and it can be super easy to maintain in between visits as well.
My model is sporting an edgy Mohawk that was achieved with my professional technique, especially designed to keep a lot of movement in the hair. This is a low maintenance hair style, requiring minimal up-keep in between salon visits, but there are some "at-home" tips you need to know.    Contact me today for more information on how maintain this “polished” look !

Is a short style right for you?

Each client has natural beauty; your unique facial structure and your personality speak volumes and we’ll discuss the most flattering cut for you.

If your primary concern, (after looking  good of course!) is how to keep your new, short style sharp and sexy, just schedule a complimentary consultation and see what I have in store for you.

When we meet, I can determine the growth rate of your hair and how often you may need a trim your style to keep that precise and pristine look.

Another urban myth that I hear a lot is that "women of a certain age should always consider getting a shorter cut"…that is not totally true and when we meet I’ll tell you the full story on why it’s an individual choice, not an AGE choice!   It’s true that a dynamic short style can be just as alluring and eye-catching as longer hair styles and I’m looking forward to sharing some great tips with you!
